100th Birthday
Emmet Kemper of Piedmont, center, marked a milestone in his life Saturday. Kemper celebrated his 100th birthday. He was born May 3, 1908. Kemper spent his birthday at the Piedmont Canyon Club, playing in a tournament that is named in his honor. Emmet was slated to play with his son, Bob, but illness prevented Bob from participating. This did not stop Emmet; he played without a partner and completed 26 holes of the 27 holes. After finishing golfing, he found the clubhouse filled with his friends and family and a surprise birthday party in his honor. Those in attendance enjoyed a dinner, and then Kemper was honored with a champagne toast. The toastmasters were Kemper’s children, Bob and Charlotte. His golfing partner, Jackie Burbank, and dear friend, Lorraine Wohlschlaeger, also offered toasts. |

Decisions, Challenges Ahead
On March 18, a flood devastated parts of Wayne County. For the most part, life has gotten back to fairly normal. However, there are many challenges and decisions to be made.
There are many homes that were flooded that are vacant. Repairs have not been made. In many instances, homeowners are wanting to sell their homes in a flood buyout program. Funding for that type of program has not been approved.
In Piedmont, the city is seeking grant funds to do another voluntary buyout in the McKenzie Creek floodplain. The Ozark Foothills Regional Planning Commission has been contacted to write the city’s grant application. According to city officials, numerous property owners have expressed interest in a flood buyout.

Taiwanese Buddhists Visit, Offer Help
With a message of love and hope, a group of Taiwanese Buddhists visited Piedmont Saturday with hopes of helping people who had suffered losses during the March 18 flooding. Working with the Wayne County Long-Term Recovery Committee, the Tzu Chi Foundation presented $300 debit cards and gifts to 50 area residents Saturday morning at the Clearwater Family Youth Center.
According to Amy Hsieh, executive director of the Midwest Region of the Tzu Chi Foundation, the group had hoped to offer aid to more area residents. They had invited over 70 people to the event.
People who arrived were educated about Tzu Chi. It is an international, non-profit charitable organization with four major service areas: charitable services, medical services, education, and cultural services. Tzu Chi means serving with compassion.
