The Piedmont Police Department is investigating a wreck that involved Piedmont Mayor Bill Kirkpatrick. The wreck occurred Sunday afternoon and reportedly caused several thousand dollars damage to a Piedmont apartment building.
Police Chief Richard Sanders confirmed that his department is investigating an accident. He said the crash occurred at Main and Durham streets.
“The investigation is ongoing,” Sanders said. “We’re conducting the investigation as quickly as possible. Charges are pending.”
Richard Bloom of Piedmont told the newspaper Tuesday morning that he lived in the apartment building that was hit. He said that it sounded like an explosion and the entire building shook. Bloom said that due to the crash, his apartment is no longer livable.
Several people witnessed the crash, according to reports to the newspaper. Bloom contends the mayor was driving while intoxicated at the time of the crash. Bloom said that Kirkpatrick drove off from the crash scene before authorities arrived.
“I wrote down the license number and gave it to officers Gerry Allen and Phillip Burton when they arrived on the scene.”
