William James Scharr

William James Scharr, Sr., age 89, passed away Friday, July 10, 2020, at his home near Piedmont. He was born June 18, 1931, at St. Louis, Mo., the son of Wilson Scharr and Rose (Kunz) Scharr.

Bill was an Army Veteran, serving from 1948 to 1951, and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans organization. He was a self-employed carpenter and was an avid hunter and fisherman.

He was married to Verdie Combs December 4, 1963, in East St. Louis and had been a long time resident of Piedmont.

Preceding him in death are his parents, Wilson and Rose Scharr and two sisters, Marjorie Lucas and Patsy Dressler.

Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Verdie Scharr, of the home, 6 children, Bill Scharr, Jr. and his wife Janet, of Piedmont, Margie Scharr and her companion Tony, of Piedmont, Kay Kiser, of Patterson, Rosea Scharr and her companion Dwaine, of Mt. Vernon, Mo., Bobby Scharr, of Piedmont and Nancy Jones and her husband John, of Piedmont.

Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. He will be very deeply missed by all those who knew and loved him.

Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 14, 2020, at the Morrison Funeral Chapel in Piedmont with Elder Tom Willis officiating. Special recorded songs were played for the service and Billy Scharr, Bobby Scharr, Patrick Scharr, Zack Scharr, John Jones, Mike Solak and Jimmy Connell served as Pall Bearers. Graveside Honors were provided by the US Army and the Piedmont American Legion Post #281 Honor Guard. Interment was in the Scharr Family Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Chapel. Memorials have been suggested to the Wounded Warriors Foundation.
