Verna Mae Newell

Verna Mae Newell, age 78 passed away Wednesday, August 12, 2020 at St. Mary’s Hospital in St. Louis, MO. She was born August 13, 1941 in Hiram, MO, the daughter of Claude Montgomery and Iva (Thurston) Montgomery.
Verna was raised in the Hiram community and was married to Elmer Newell January 1, 1960 at Hiram. He passed away July 18, 1982. Verna lived in St. Louis for many years and retired as a cook at A.B. Green Middle School. She was a lifelong member of Turkey Creek General Baptist Church.
Preceding her in death are her parents, Claude and Iva Montgomery and her husband Elmer Newell.
Survivors include two sons, Rodney Newell and his wife Cyndy, of Crestwood, MO, Timothy Newell and his wife Jennie, of Afton, MO, one brother, Donald Montgomery, of Hiram and one sister, Linda Montgomery, of Hiram.
Also surviving are two grandchildren, Christopher Newell and his wife Kate, of St. Louis, Meghan Newell, of Afton and one great grandchild, Geneva Newell, of St. Louis.
Graveside services were held on Saturday, August 15, 2020 with Rev. Jamie Hovis officiating. Rev. Hovis sang a special song. Interment was in Cowan Cemetery under the direction of Morrison Funeral Chapel.
