Wappapello Woman Dies in House Fire

One person died in an early-morning house fire near Wappapello Monday while two others narrowly escaped.
42-year-old Melissa Dillinger died in the inferno.
“The call was received at 4:16 a.m.,” said Wayne County Sheriff Dean Finch.
“Basically, the call came in as a structure fire,” Finch added. “and the Wappapello Fire Department was paged out.”
The home on County Road 523, also known commonly as Pisos Point Road, was fully involved when firefighters and deputies from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department arrived, Finch said.
The residence was home to a family of three, Finch said, and both the father and disabled son were able to make it out of the structure.
“The dad went out the window, and the son got out, too,” Finch said.
The son was transported to a local hospital for treatment, Finch reported.
“The mother got trapped and didn’t make it out,” he said.
Firefighters from the Wappapello and Stoddard County fire departments were able to put the fire out.
“I told them to call the state fire marshal,” Finch said, noting the investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
