South Iron Moves to 6-0

The South Iron Boys Varsity Basketball team remained perfect with wins over Ellington and Osage. They downed the Whippets on Tuesday, Dec. 6, 81-52 before beating the Indians 74-59 on Friday. They now 6-0.
The Panthers jumped to 22-10 first-quarter lead. They poured in 24 in the second quarter to lead 46-24 at the half.
South Iron came in after the break and dropped a game-high 30 points in the third quarter and held the Whippets to just 11. That 76-35 lead was quite enough for Coach Dusty Dinkins put in the subs in the fourth.
Ellington cut into the lead, scoring 17 points, but it wasn’t nearly enough. South Iron held on to win 81-52.
Jermartez Burse scored 34 points. He was 6-of-12 from three-point range and also led the team with eight rebounds. Kolton Dinkins and Sawyer Huff scored 12 points apiece.
“We had a very good shooting night!” Coach Dusty Dinkins said “Our defensive intensity was also very impactful. Overall, a very good game for our team.”
On Friday, South Iron traveled to Greenwood to take on the Osage Indians.
South Iron jumped to an 18-13 first-quarter lead. The two-team traded baskeet in the second. The Panthers scored 24 and Osage had 22. South Iron held a 42-35 advantage at the break.
Things wouldn’t be much different in the third, as both teams kept it tight. The Panthers managed 18, but couldn’t extend the lead. Osage scored 17.
In the fourth, South Iron outscored Osage 15-6 to close out the victory. The 74-59 win against another Class 4 school this year moved the Panthers to 6-0 on the season.
Coach Dinkins on the effort, “Great experience for our team. A three and a half hour bus ride and several distractions for us to overcome; while trying to compete against a solid Class 4 team. We weren’t our best and turned the ball over too many times, but we battled as a team and secured the win!”
Huff and Burse were standouts once again, as they both scored 22 points to lead the offense. Burse pulled down six rebounds and had five steals. Huff had three assists, three rebounds and a pair of steals. Marquis Burse pumped in 15 points and Kolton Dinkins had 11 points; he led the team with eight rebounds.
